Firenze è una delle città che amo di più; un po’ per l’arte, il cibo e il vino, un po’ per la vicinanza a Roma che fa sì che vi si arrivi in poche ore. Abbiamo fatto i soliti giri di sempre: Ponte Vecchio, mercato di San Lorenzo, Piazza del Duomo, ma la scusa per tornarci è stata la mostra dedicata a Marina Abramovic a Palazzo Strozzi.

Se avete intenzione di visitarla andate di pomeriggio, quando vengono riproposte quasi tutte le performance. Si accede all’esibizione passando nello spazio limitato di una “porta” i cui stipiti sono i corpi nudi di un uomo e una donna (come nell’installazione realizzata da Marina e Ulay nel 1977). Sta al visitatore scegliere verso chi volgersi e come atteggiarsi. L’elemento ricorrente è lo spettatore che, instaurando un rapporto con l’artista, diventa parte dell’opera d’arte.

Diciamo la verità, la performance è un tipo di arte che è facile scambiare per cialtroneria, quella più esposta al rischio di sfociare nel ridicolo. E alcune delle performance di Marina Abramovic sono davvero sconvolgenti. Che piaccia o no, la sua arte e la sua esistenza sono interdipendenti, nel legame con la storia del suo paese natale, la Serbia, e con la vita privata e lavorativa condivisa con Ulay.

L’incredibile storia d’amore tra i due ha dato vita ad alcune delle performance più belle secondo me, come The Great Wall Walk: la camminata di tre mesi che i due decidono di fare partendo dai capi opposti della Grande Muraglia, per incontrarsi e dirsi addio dopo 12 anni d’amore e di collaborazione professionale. A questa performance è dedicata un’intera sala che mostra i filmati della coppia che cammina, spesso arrampicandosi su quelle che sono poco più che macerie, a volte inerpicandosi su picchi ripidissimi, una “passeggiata” di 250 km.

C’era anche una tra le mia preferite: The Lovers, dove Ulay tende una freccia sul cuore di Marina che, di fronte a lui, regge l’arco in tensione: la rappresentazione estrema della fiducia in 5 minuti di pura inquietudine. Davanti ai filmati di alcune performance non si può far altro che restare ipnotizzati, per quanto disturbanti.

A metà della mostra si entra in una sala vuota, se non per un tavolo con due sedie al centro della sala. Sulle pareti un mosaico di filmati mostra decide e decine di volti: è The Artist is Present, la performance realizzata al MoMA di New York, dove Marina Abramovic si sedette ogni giorno per 8 ore di fronte ad una sedia vuota che veniva di volta in volta occupata dai visitatori del museo. Le persone semplicemente si sedevano e, stavano così, occhi negli occhi con l’artista, in silenzio e senza limiti di tempo. In tanti sono scoppiati in lacrime. Durante questa performance a un certo punto si è seduto davanti a lei Ulay. La loro relazione era finita e i due non si vedevano da molto tempo. Ogni volta che rivedo la scena mi fa piangere.

Se ne esce completamente svuotati. Secondo me è da vedere, perché Marina Abramovic è la più grande artista donna contemporanea. Ed eventualmente per liberarsi dal pregiudizio che performance art sia solo fuffa.

The Cleaner: Marina Abramovic exhibition in Florence

Florence is one of the cities I love the most; for its art, food and wine and also because it’s very easy to reach from Rome. We did our usual tour: Ponte Vecchio, the market of San Lorenzo, Piazza del Duomo, but the excuse to go back was the exhibition dedicated to Marina Abramovic, hosted at Palazzo Strozzi.

If you’re planning a visit be sure to go in the afternoon, when most of the artist’s performances are repeated. You access the exhibition by passing through the limited space of a “door” whose jambs are the naked bodies of a man and a woman (as in the action created by Marina and Ulay in 1977). It’s up to the visitor to choose who to face and how to act while walking through. Here, as in all the works of Marina Abramovic, the viewer becomes part of the work of art thanks to the relationship established with the artist.

Let’s face it, performance is a kind of art that is most exposed to the risk of resulting foolish. And some of Marina Abramovic’s performances are really shocking. Like it or not, her art and her existence are interdependent, connected with the history of his native country, Serbia, and with the private and working life she shared with Ulay.

The incredible love story between the two gave birth to some of the most beautiful performances in my opinion, such as The Great Wall Walk: the three-month stroll that the two decided to take starting from the opposite ends of the Great Wall, to meet and say goodbye to each other after 12 years of love and professional collaboration. The filmed performance is hosted in an entire room that shows footages of the couple walking, most of the time climbing ruins and steep peaks, for “just” 250 km.

There was also one of my favorite: The Lovers, where Ulay holds an arrow pointing to the heart of Marina that, in front of him, pulls the bow: an extreme representation of trust in 5 minutes of pure tension. When looking at some of the performances you can not help but remain hypnotized, no matter how disturbing they are.

Halfway through the exhibition you enter an empty room, except for a table with two chairs. On the walls a mosaic of videos shows dozens of faces: it’s The Artist is Present, the performance realized at the MoMA of New York, where Marina Abramovic sat every day for 8 hours in front of an empty chair that was occupied by visitors to the museum in turn. People simply sat and stood, eyes in the eye with the artist, in silence and without time limits. Many burst into tears. During this performance at some point Ulay came and sat in front of her. Their relationship was over and the two had not seen each other for a long time. Every time I see the scene, it makes me cry.

At the end of the visit I felt completely drained. I think it’s worth seeing it, because Marina Abramovic is the greatest contemporary female artist. And also, to get rid of the prejudice that performance art is just crap.
